Clutter is not only frustrating, it can also have a negative effect on our mental health.
To jump-start your journey into a clutter-free lifestyle, I am going to tell you the top 10 things you can declutter right now!
Bills, notes, old school forms… you name it, we keep it!
We don’t even realise that it is being hoarded until it is too late and we open a drawer to find it stuffed to the brim with paperwork that is no longer needed.
This will probably be the easiest thing to declutter, but not necessarily the quickest.
If you can, don’t just throw it out though. Shred it and use it in craft, compost or any other way you can think of. If you’re in the position to it is also a great option to recycle it.
If you find bills that you believe you should keep, simply scan them and save them on a secure hard drive. I like to email certain bits of paperwork to myself as an added back up.
For hard copies that you absolutely cannot get rid of (birth certificates etc), get a folder and store them in there.
If you’re a parent, this one will speak to you like it does me!
A lot of children (Mine included) have an excess amount of toys. More than they probably need, including some that they have very much outgrown.
So sort through them. Keep the essentials, throw the broken ones and donate the ones that have been outgrown.
On the island we have a local Mums & Bubs group, and the midwife who runs it collects unwanted clothes and toys to donate to new mothers to the island. It is a great cause so that is where all of Lunas old clothes and toys go.
Somehow our kitchen drawers tend to get to a point where they are hard to open and close, we seem to magically collect all of the utensils known to mankind.
This should only take 5-10 minutes. Go through the drawers and get rid of anything broken, never used or double ups.
You may think you need those cookie cutters, but if you never bake then why do you have them?
Physical media – cds, DVDs etc
The age of physical media is dying in a lot of households. With services like Spotify and Netflix, a lot of us rarely touch our DVD collection any more.
So it is time to haul them out!
I know, this one can be difficult. You’ve invested so much money into building your collection. If you can, try to sell them. But if you can’t then donate them to a local charity or op shop.
Keep a select few – I like to keep my TV Series Box Sets and Disney Movies. But the rest, they gotta go!
I hate it when I go to grab Panadol and I find empty packets, or even worse – expired!
For such an important part of the household it is amazing how much medicine boxes/cabinets seem to become their own little hoarding zone.
So go through and throw out anything that has expired. If you need to replace it, make a note on your shopping list.
Also use this time as a good opportunity to clean up your cabinet!
Your desk (super important)
Whether or not you work from home, a lot of us have a desk space for various reasons. Whether it be where we house our laptop/computer or where we do our taxes. Having a cluttered desk can be extremely distracting.
I suggest taking some time on this one. Get rid of anything non-essential and make your desk space something designed for its specific purpose.
Shoes, shoes, shoes. My daughter is 18 months old and somehow has a collection of at least 12 pairs. Even though some no longer fit!
It doesn’t just stop at our kids. We tend to have shoes for every occasion, including the “I really liked them and they were on sale” occasion!
Do you ever look in the back of your bathroom cupboard and realise in horror that some body wash from 2014 has leaked all over the back of the cabinet?
It happens to the best of us!
So get in there and clear it out. Get rid of expired, unused and unwanted products.
Dining room table
Or as I like to call it the table of “I’ll fold the clothes later”.
Why is it that our dining room tables somehow become a gravity zone for laundry and paperwork?
Well, no more! It is time to clear that table and enjoy a nice clean surface!
If you have a BluRay/DVD player that you no longer use often, store it.
If you put your keys, purse or bills there – move them to a more viable location.
Any gaming consoles can also be put away unless used regularly.
These simple things that don’t seem to be doing harm are effecting the way you treat your home.
What else can you declutter right now?
Anything you want! It doesn’t matter how small the decluttering seems, every single bit counts and is one step closer to a stress-free life!
